you approached glass in a very different manner then the rest of the peoples i have read today the only thing I can say is your dead wrong about the paradise. it is by no means an anomaly it is there for a reason. As a dance hall we can infer that it is an obnoxiously loud place were happy people rub up against each other. all These happy people stand in stark contrast to the Hell that Tom and co. live in, ever notice when the paradise is seen and heard most clearly in the movie? when the characters approach there closest moments of freedom to leave that hell. it appears when Tom stands on the front pourch and speaks with his mother about the MM and when he talks with Jim about his sister. For the sister it appears just before and just after she kisses jim. While it never appears for Amanda that is easily explainable- she'll never be happy!

Be sure, too, Jeff to attribute the source of your ideas just as you would others' words. I don't see any references to Bogard's claims about the symbolism in your post.

Bogard is right on, I think, with the use of stone(s) in this play. Boundaries, walls, hardness, obstacles, weight, endurance--so many associations.

I hate to ask this, but did you read <i>Of Mice And Men</i> last year? The desire for a place/a piece of land to call your own, a place to call home (remember what home is according to Frost in "Death of the Hired Man"?) is such a powerful force.

Nicely done, Jeff. :)

I loved the use of the stone walls. I never thought much of it during the story but it is evident that there is a big use of the stone walls in showing the boundaries within this family

AND I TOTALLY HATE THOSE QUOTES THAT WON'T GO AWAY! I TRIED 3423423423523 TIMES TO DELETE THEM, BUT THEY WANT TO STAY..

WOW, awesome jobe here. "Notably, Blanche’s deception of others and herself is not characterized by malicious intent, but rather a heart-broken and saddened retreat to a romantic time and happier moments before disaster struck her life.." I enjoyed reading how you described Blanche, being different but yet it still entirely her fault. Also nice connection with the fantasy world and reality.

Ummm.. Jeff, you have FABULOUS vocabulary, diction, and AWESOME points. First of all, I'd like to say that I, too, found that Blanche was lost in a fantasy world, while reality was always looming about her all along. Mmmm, but I'm so amazed at this one last sentence:

"Blanche’s final, deluded happiness suggests that, to some extent, fantasy is a vital force at play in every individual’s experience, despite reality’s inevitable triumph."

DIRRRRTY! or should I say, FANTASTIC job making that connection with us and the play... We all do fantasize our futures, dreams, goals, etc. in life, but hey! Not only that, but in today's American society, many young girls and boys are stuck in a fantasy world of materialistic and dramatic happenings that THEY TOO need to get slapped in the face by reality. That's all I have to say about that. =) hahahaha

When I think of this poem and picture it in my head, I could see how he could stutter a lot. Almost as if he's at a loss of words and can't describe his true feelings.

This is a great poem. It realy feels like whoever reads this poem is truly on the brink, stumbling, gasping for those last few words. You might want to go through though and review I do see a few errors here. Also you might want to go back and see if you can find more connections with these lines throughout the rest of the poem.

Jeff, I like the connection about the lines being broken up and how that represents a sound, like Ashley said. Its almost like the reader is meant to hear the words instead of reading them, and they are definitely "stumbling" and broken like a stutter.

Your writing reminds me of a story in Ovid... Nice job demonstrating who Blanche really is. You covered all bases. She's stuck in a fantasy world then reality slaps her in the face like a drunk guy who gets hit standing at a foul line. Bravo.

Oh wow, Jeff. You did a great job explaining this theme you figured out. I would never have been able to put those things into actual words and sentences for people to understand. I just kind of get the notion and know it. Wooow I'm impressed with how you put this into words: "being so much your own person that you actually become locked in isolation." IMPRESSIVE. You're so good at these philosophical things.. hahaha

Interesting how you tied the whole modernist movement together despite the different aspects. So many personal issues in every writing, I'm beginning to feel like all of these authors sat down together to make this modernist movement.

I definitely think that Prufrock suffers from this so-called paradoxal character strength/flaw of both individuality and isolationism. To answer the second question, yes, when a man kills himself at the end of a text focusing on that man's severe inability to communicate with society, it can be read as a cautionary text.

Jeff, delete the above (with the messed up formating--some tags don't work on this site) in favor of this version. Tx.

Okay, you're on to something interesting, Jeff. Take this, for example:

<blockquote>But now, we’re starting to see this whole scene of being so much your own person that you actually become locked in isolation, that doesn’t get anywhere good fast. I believe that that isolationism is based on an akward inability to communicate, and a feeling of paranoia as to what would happen if the individual were to put themselves out there and present themselves in an almost overly intimate way with society. It.s almost like a warning of allowing yourself to be trapped in your own mind. And I think that that theme translates very easily into the lifestyles of the present day.</blockquote>

(You've got a few typos in there--)

This observation is astute:

<blockquote>so much your own person that you actually become locked in isolation, </blockquote>

The notion that strength of character (?) can isolate is paradoxical if not counterintuitive on some levels, no? Do you believe that Prufrock suffers from this paradox?

Also, this:

<blockquote> It.s almost like a warning of allowing yourself to be trapped in your own mind. And I think that that theme translates very easily into the lifestyles of the present day. </blockquote>

The interior prison is something many generations have wrestled with, but few have openly explored. I hear you saying that the isolation Prufrock experiences is with us still.

Question: can Prufrock be read as a cautionary text?

Oh man, that's true. Before modernism got into the swing of things, it must've been basically unheard of for a character to not be able to convey their feelings easily. Hooray for modernism making writing more realistic! And those two movies are definitely twisted enough for us to watch in this class :)

Great job interpreting the poem. I agree that a lack of communication creates a certain shadow or beliefs that come from ignorance or distrust between those whom you do not communicate with one another.

Nice and short, to the point, good job.

Wow, what a random assortment of songs, What do any of them have to do with modern literature? More importantly, what do any of them have to do with each other? If your goal was to confuse me, you certainly did a commendable job. Regarding my identity, I am certainly not Carson and I'm not in a study while you guys are busy working hard.

Jeff,

Certainly both poems explore a certain inarticulateness, and you are right to pick up on it. After all (and after reading the analysis I provided you folks on "Hollow," how many different words does Eliot actually use? Yikes. Verbal constipation, no? What's the deal?

That's a good point. Also, when you say the shadow separates the men from other things, it almost seems like the poem foreshadowed it. The whole thing is like a separation from a part of themselves. Kind of like they want to be a part of something, or once were, but aren't anymore.. Eh. See what I'm getting at?
When he refers to being hollow and faded away, doesn't that infer that there was once something? I get that idea from the first couple stanzas.
